Chester is an ancient and charming city located in the north-west region of England. It has a population of approximately 77,000 people and provides close links to the larger nearby cities of Liverpool and Manchester, and to the rural wilderness of North Wales. Shopping, sight-seeing and culture continually draw tourists from all over the world to Chester. Here is a brief history of the city and some ideas of things to do during a visit.
An Important Roman Fort
Chester is one of the oldest settlements in Britain. It was founded as a military fort by the invading Romans sometime around 70 AD. They called it ‘Deva,’ and used it to repel attacks from rebellious Welsh warriors who would not submit to Roman rule. Historians believe that due to the abnormally large size of the fort, the Romans would have used Deva as the principal city of Britain had they not been forced to retreat due to the collapse of their empire 300 years later.
In the fifth century the Saxons refortified the settlement and gave it the name of ‘Chester.’ Shortly after the successful Norman invasion of England in 1066, Chester Castle was built to aid in the invasion of Wales and Ireland. The Normans also created the Earldom of Chester, one of the most powerful governing influences in medieval England. Chester was granted city status in 1541.
